5/2 Live From Studio A: The Fontanelles

Apr 23, 2018

Duluth native Dave Mehling has busied himself with several projects since moving to the Twin Cities, including the band Portage, his duo MR DR, and performing in Gaelynn Lea's band. It's been three years since he's put out an album with his indie rock band the Fontanelles, but two singles released earlier this year may be a sign of more to come. We found out when they joined us in the studio on May 2. They performed the same night at Clyde Iron Works in Duluth.

5/1 Live From Studio A: The Old Smugglers

Apr 23, 2018

Superior native Erik Pearson is best known for his work as an artist (you may have seen his murals at the Red Mug Coffee Shop and the Spirit Room) but he's always kept music as a sideline. His most recent project is this duo that includes fellow Wisconsinite Joshua Murray; they recently released album number three, Hard Pan to Chaos. In last year's Homegrown blog we described their sound as, "Tom-Waits-meets-sea-shanties," but you can judge for yourself when you listen to their performance from our studios on Tuesday, May 1.

5/1 Live From Studio A: Boreal Forest

Apr 23, 2018

These Minneapolis transplants have been making dream pop/rock with synths and guitars since 2015. They released a debut album, Terraform, in 2017. They performed a Homegrown set at Blush on May 4; we got a preview when they joined us in the studio on May 1.

Back in 2016, when they were still known as Medical Underground, these local alternative indie rockers were voted by users of local blog, Perfect Duluth Day, to be the band that "won" Homegrown that year. After a name change, the band got to work on its first album, Paradise, which was released on April 20. They performed tunes from that album and we found out what they had planned for this year's Homegrown show when they joined us in the studio on April 30.

Mar 19, 2018

Duluth native Harvie drew attention with their high school band, Vivielle, which eventually broke up after the members went off to college. After putting out some solo material, Harvie formed this "100% queer" solo project that also features bassist Becca DeBoer (Red Mountain) and drummer Sam Williams (Chase Down Blue). Teague Alexy and Erik Berry
Christine Dean for KUMD

Teague Alexy's Irish immigrant grandparents inspired his love of Irish music, while one of mandolinist Erik Berry's pre-Trampled by Turtles bands was called Father McClanahan and His Irish Snake Stompers. The two found themselves comparing notes about Irish music for years before joining forces to perform and record in the genre. They released an album, Irish American, in late 2017. They joined us in the studio on March 14 to give us a preview of a run of shows they have scheduled for St.
