Drip irrigation uses a series of pipes and tubes to deliver water to the base of each plant. Because little water is lost to evaporation and runoff, this method uses less water than sprinklers and trenches.

This year's heat and drought will be character-building for new gardeners

There's a reason Northland Gardeners refer to themselves as "hardy." And this year, with the relentless heat and persistent drought, has been more challenging than most.

But what about new gardeners who are just getting their feet wet — that is, their feet dusty in gardening?

At least there's a helpful community to keep their spirits up.
