This year's Duluth Dylan Festival featured a concert from Joan Osborne, whose most recent album, Songs of Bob Dylan, paid tribute to Duluth's native son.

Among the many events during this year's Duluth Dylan Fest, there was the poetry event on Wednesday night at Teatro Zuccone featuring poems from the anthology Visiting Bob: Poems Inspired by the Life and Work of Bob Dylan, edited by Thom Tammaro and Alan Davis and published in 2018 by New Rivers Press in Moorhead, Minnesota.

In this surprisingly personal conversation with The "award-winning, million-copy bestselling author Leif Enger," the lifelong-Minnesotan-turned-Duluthian talks about the dangers of admiration, how radio journalism shaped his fascination with people's stories, and how "writing is part of the thinking process."

Duluth Dylan Fest kicks off Saturday May 18, with the opening of the William Pagel Archives Bob Dylan Exhibit at Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum, with the reception happening the following Saturday, May 25 in conjunction with the John Bushey Memorial Lecture by David Gaines.  The annual festival celebrates the legacy and music of Bob Dylan with a full week of events May 18-26 in Duluth, with art, poetry, a Dylan birthday party and of course nightly of music events.

It's no coincidence that the Duluth Dylan Festival is paying a bit more attention to the literary aspect of its favorite son's career, now that he's a Nobel laureate.

Duluth Dylan Fest is an annual celebration of Bob Dylan's work and influence. Celebrate Duluth's native son with exciting events planned including live music, art, poetry, and more.

There are different viewpoints on what constitutes a long song.  When it comes to writing, Bob Dylan has spun some long yarns like the 11 verse "Hurricane" or 10 verses of Desolation Row.  Never have they seemed so long as when written out, by hand, stenciled in 2 inch type.  "Some of his longer songs are 27 feet long" says installation artist Skye.

If the committee had seen Bob Dylan's high school poetry, would he still have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016?

For better or worse, they didn't, but Dylan fans will be able to see some of the Dylan poetry canon (circa Hibbing High School, 1956) later this month at the Minnesota Historical Society.

With Bob Dylan being an avid artist, it's nice to see the week long celebration of the man and his music, Duluth Dylan Fest, will also include an art exhibit. Dylan has been painting and welding metal sculpture for much of his adult life and his work  shares a slice of the many places in the world his career has taken him.

In 2016, on Highway 61 Revisited we shared a special holiday show.  Host John Bushey shared rare  and unknown cuts, none so dear as when Bob Dylan reads "A Visit from St. Nicholas," better known as "Twas the Night Before Christmas" first published in 1823.
