Consider the lowly city utility box.

For all that they're usually 3-5 feet tall and a couple-three feet wide, chances are you don't even notice them.

But at Canal Park anyway .... that's due to change this morning (May 15).

More information about the Imagine Duluth projects is available here.

KUMD will be at Cold Front February in Canal Park broadcasting KUMD programming and hanging out with the Fat Tire bikes. Come say hi to us in between your sips of hot cocoa, sled runs, and music from Brothers Burn Mountain and NorShore Summit

The Imagine Canal Park project wrapped up last month and now it's time to crunch the data and evaluate what worked and what didn't.

Folks haven't heard the last of it, though: there are plans to go ahead with Cold Front February again this year and once the artists get done with them, you may be paying more attention to those utility boxes than you ever thought you might.

City of Duluth/Imagine Canal Park

" ... Imagine no congestion

I wonder if you can

A plaza in Canal Park

Part of the city's plan.

Imagine there is parking

And, perhaps, it's free....."

~ with apologies to John Lennon

Only in the Northland.

Only in a town that a mere 22 years ago celebrated -39 below would a few folks decide to throw a modest little four-day celebration and have it turn into an entire month of revelry, pop-ups, activities, events, deals and more.

Cold Front February is moving through all month.

We speak with Duluth City Councilor-at-Large Elissa Hansen.  She is the Chair of the Finance Committee and the writer of an award-winning grant that was submitted to the Knight Foundation for Imagine Canal Park. This award will be celebrated today with a free and open-to-the-public Community Launch Party from 4 to 7 p.m. in Canal Park.

The perceived "east-west divide" in Duluth is significant, especially when it comes to socio-economic barriers and even a ten-year discrepancy in life expectancy, depending on where you live.

Could meeting in the middle somewhere, say, Canal Park, help get people thinking in a new way?

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation think so, and they're willing to shell out $200,000 to find out.
