Duluth Folk School

There's always been some ... tension .... between art and "crafts."  Not "craft," mind you, but "crafts."

Resolve the tension with coffee and eggs Sunday at the Virtual Fika & Slöjd: Folk Art Eggs session, Sunday at 1pm courtesy of the Nordic Center.

Explore the craft of art and the art in crafts while learning how to make painted, folk art Easter eggs.  Or BYOC (bring your own craft).

Shannon Cousino/Duluth Art Institute

There will be a closing reception for Shannon Cousino's "little exhibit of big woodcuts" at the Duluth Art Institute on Tuesday, December 10th from 5:30-7pm.

Lincoln Park's Craft District Holiday Market is this weekend: if you can't find what you need with 120 vendors in six locations around the Craft District ... maybe you should just go to lunch instead.

These young photographers may be lecturing you about "the good old days of film" before long.  The Duluth Art Institute's public darkroom will be getting a workout when the Youth Film Photography Club gets snappy Wednesday at 5:30pm

KUMD speaks with Bryan French the co-founder and current director of the Duluth Folk School.

Founded in 2016, they have experienced such significant growth that the space they share with Dovetail Café in Lincoln Park is becoming too cramped, and often can be too disruptive for the co-habitation of the two entities.

Cary Morin
Matthew Kako for KUMD

This Colorado-based musician has a style that blends blues, bluegrass, jazz, jam, and more and has been called "acoustic Native Americana." A member of the Crow tribe, Morin has performed around the world both as a member of groups The Atoll and The Pura Fe Trio and as a solo artist. Currently touring behind his sixth album, When I Rise, Morin is acclaimed for his fingerpicking skills, but is an equally talented songwriter and singer. He performed at the Duluth Folk School on August 24. He joined us that afternoon to record a session that aired on Folk Migrations.

Rachael Kilgour in Sutdio A

This native Duluthian recently released a new EP, Game Changer, which has been nominated for two Independent Music Awards. As the singer/songwriter has continued to expand her fanbase, spending time on the Boston music scene and touring regularly, she's played fewer hometown shows, so we were looking forward to her vinyl release show at the Duluth Folk School on April 27. We got a preview when she joined us in the studio on April 24.

Matt Kania

Even though the weather this week is cloudy and grey, an abundance of art around us this week can brighten the day.  Annie Dugan reports on these events:

- Tonight (Monday, 12/3) from 5 to 7 pm at the Zeitgeist Atrium is the opening reception for plein air artist Matt Kania's exhibit "DOing: A Labor of Love," featuring oil paintings of artists and artisans doing the art or craft that they love.
