Grief

Kao Kalia Yang's book The Shared Room begins as what she calls "a love letter" to the 6-year-old who drowned three years ago at the Lake Elmo Park Reserve, the little girl she'd gotten to know and who told the author, "When I grow up I want to be a writer. Not just any writer, but one like you."

You might expect the partnership of Chan Poling (TheĀ  Suburbs, The New Standards) and Lucy Michell (Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles) to produce a musical - or at least an album.

But instead, they've produced a picture book.

Fellow musician Jeremy Messersmith says:

Jack and the Ghost is a gorgeously illustrated meditation on grief and loss, a poignant reminder to not let the ghosts of the past control the present.

Lois Rafferty has spoken, written and taught about issues of grief and loss for years.

But it wasn't until she wrote Carnie's Child that she learned that "everyone has a painful story inside of them."
