Wendy Ruhnke is a Duluth music superfan who missed attending shows during the pandemic and took it upon herself to making her backyard a Duluth music mecca, hosting shows featuring Twin Ports heavy hitters like Rich Mattson, Al Sparwhawk, Charlie Parr, and many more for small gatherings. She joined Marvin Themix on The Local on April 28, 2021.

This week on The Local Malachy spoke with Mark Lindquist. The former Duluth rocker is now running the Central Lakes College Audio Club who recently released a compilation album, A Secret Garden, to benefit students struggling during the covid pandemic. We found out how the club helps students learn valuable music skills and how many of our favorite Duluth musicians ended up on the compilation.

Marvin Themix sat down for a conversation with Thro, an 18-year-old musician who spent the past year distance learning at the Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley after a year on their campus. He discusses his newest EP, A Week with Annabelle, and the inspiration he gathers for his songwriting from his spring walks up the Lester River.

Justin Wade Interview on The Local

Marvin Themix had a chat with a brand new performer in town named Justin Wade who's released just a few singles on his YouTube page. Hailing from Grand Rapids and spending time in Colorado and Italy, he moved to Duluth just as the pandemic hit, Wade is starting to perform on the stages that he moved to Duluth to perform on that are opening back up. He shares a couple of original tunes (Picasso Sunrise and Calculus) that showcase his slick guitar playing style and his natural voice.

Minnesota Music Hall of Famer Mick Sterling is well known to local audiences, performing his brand of Soul and R & B at the Bayfront Blues Festival as well as other venues with his band The Stud Brothers during their 17-year run. KUMD's DJ Malachy spoke with Sterling about his musical career and new book, And Else, in advance of Sterling's most recent Duluth appearance for a book signing and performance.

Paul Lundgren, one of the founders of Perfect Duluth Day (Duluth's self-proclaimed "Duluthiest" web site) joined DJ Marvin Themix to talk about how it all started, how the pandemic has affected what they do, and what keeps him in Duluth. Also, as a member of the Duluth Homegrown Music Festival committee, he gives us a preview of this year's virtual event.

It's been a year since Duluth musician Gaelynn Lea started livestreaming from home weekly during the COVID-19 pandemic. DJ Malachy checked in with her on the Local to talk about what the past year has been like for her and what she has coming up. They talked about the EP she released using material from those home sessions; you can listen to full versions of those songs on Gaelynn's Bandcamp page.

The Dames on The Local 8/14

Legendary local heavy rockers The Dames made their mark on the Duluth music scene and beyond from 1996 until 2005. The trio reunited in 2017; they've since played a handful of shows and recently released Detritus, a collection of rarities. We talked with lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter Tony Bennett during The Local on Wednesday, August 14 at 5:30pm and shared some tracks as a preview for their Duluth release show on Saturday, August 17, at Pizza Luce.
