Paul Cerar

"DIY bedroom rock" is how this young Duluth-based musician describes his music. We got a taste when he joined us in the studio on September 20. He had an album release show for his latest, The Royal We, the following night at Blush in downtown Duluth.

Cactus Blossoms
Cactus Blossoms

The Cactus Blossoms – Minneapolis-based brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey – bring their original, yet classic harmonies to the Sacred Heart Music Center.

Their 2016 debut You’re Dreaming, a stunning and transporting collection of original songs, earned high praise from Rolling Stone and Vice Noisey. Now their unlikely rise continues with new album Easy Way, to be released on their own label Walkie Talkie Records.

Tune into KUMD this Wednesday to win tickets!

KUMD Album Review: i,i

Bon Iver i,i
Bon Iver

Someone broke Justin Vernon’s heart in 2006. He recovered by holing up in a Wisconsin cabin for the winter where he wrote the Bon Iver debut album For Emma, Forever Ago.

Reina del Cid

This Twin Cities indie folk/rock artist built a following by recording weekly YouTube videos. Del Cid has expanded her sound with the addition of a backing band; they have a new album due out on October 4 and recently released the first single, a song about a ghost named Bernadette. We found out more and heard some tunes when del Cid and her band joined us live in the studio on September 20. It was a preview of their show the same night at Prove Gallery in Duluth.

KUMD Album Review: Suburban Life

Life Parade
Life Parade: Suburban Life

Life Parade’s Suburban Life introduces itself with a misdirection; the opening track “Sine” sounds more like a prologue than a first song. Between the distorted voice over murmuring “I know you’re anxious…” and buzzing electronica, the first impression is of a personal space epic.

Mary Bue

Since our last visit with this Minnesota native, she made the difficult decision to close her Twin Cities yoga studio in order to follow the pull of making music her full-time job. Bue assembled a new band to record her forthcoming album, The World is Your Lover. Her website describes the collection, due to be released early next year, as "power pop, piano dream waves, and layers and layers of shimmery 90’s influenced guitars." A lifelong seeker, Bue recently traveled to India, which led to her adding a new instrument, the harmonium, to her repertoire.

KUMD Album Review: Twelve Nudes

Ezra Furman
Ezra Furman

Chicago native Ezra Furman set out to make a punk record for his eighth album. During the dark days of 2018, Furman and his band “drank and smoked” their way into a blistering, concise protest album in Twelve Nudes. All of the songs express pent up rage or distress, and almost all of them do it loudly.

8/24 Live From Studio A: Cary Morin

Aug 16, 2019
Cary Morin
Matthew Kako for KUMD

This Colorado-based musician has a style that blends blues, bluegrass, jazz, jam, and more and has been called "acoustic Native Americana." A member of the Crow tribe, Morin has performed around the world both as a member of groups The Atoll and The Pura Fe Trio and as a solo artist. Currently touring behind his sixth album, When I Rise, Morin is acclaimed for his fingerpicking skills, but is an equally talented songwriter and singer. He performed at the Duluth Folk School on August 24. He joined us that afternoon to record a session that aired on Folk Migrations.

Tony Bennett in studio for The Local

Legendary local heavy rockers The Dames made their mark on the Duluth music scene and beyond from 1996 until 2005. The trio reunited in 2017; they've since played a handful of shows and recently released Detritus, a collection of rarities. We talked with lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter Tony Bennett during The Local on Wednesday, August 14 at 5:30pm and shared some tracks as a preview for their Duluth release show on Saturday, August 17, at Pizza Luce.
