Thomas Peacock

When Tom and Elizabeth Peacock started Black Bears and Blueberries Publishing, one of their goals was to create Native children's books for all audiences, written and illustrated by Native writers and artists.

Thomas Peacock's latest book for children tackles a lot of adult themes: connection to culture, to tradition, family relationships and coping with sometimes catastrophic change.

But above all, it's a children's book in the best possible sense: it's embued with hope and, of course, delivers a happy ending.

When Thomas Peacock's publisher came to him asking for a new book, they said there were plenty of books about Lake Superior, trees, rocks ...

"What's left?," thought Peacock.

Then he looked up.

The Forever Sky is published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press.

Thomas Peacock says it was an idea he had years and years ago -- but he says the first manuscript was "horrible."
