John Stetson likes the Mineral Center checkpoint.

The quiet turn-off in the woods, at the end of an 11 mile road and watched over by an old log cabin just feels good to him.

With over 30 years of mushing and training sled dogs and 13 John Beargrease marathon races with a couple of mid-distance wins thrown in, John Stetson knows where the musher's heads are by the time they reach this last checkpoint before the Beargrease race finish.

It might be Erin Schouweiler's first Beargrease as a Schouweiler -- but it's not her first sled dog race or even her first Beargrease.

Racing a team from the Schouweiler's Otter Run Kennels, including some dogs that carried her mother-in-law, Martha, to a second place finish in the mid-distance race last year, Erin handily took first in the Beargrease 120.

"She was so far ahead on the last run," says former musher, trainer, Beargrease champion and KUMD Race Reporter John Stetson, "she could just cruise in without a lot of stress.

Show an American a dog (especially on a screen) and bless their hearts, they want to adopt it.

Although dog breed fads are historically bad for dogs, it’s not out of the question that you might be captivated by a pair of two-colored eyes or a beseeching paw at the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon’s Meet the Mushers event, and wonder what it would be like to bring home a sled dog of your own.

Monica Henrickson is classically sorry/not sorry when she laughingly admits employers tell her productivity goes way down on the Monday and Tuesday of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.

And when she admits it's probably going to get worse.
